Business Central is not AI-native, and Microsoft does not claim it is. It belongs in this guide because it shows what an established ERP's AI looks like in production, and because it publishes its prices1.
Best for: Mid-sized companies on Microsoft 365 that want a full ERP with a published price and a first production AI agent for sales orders.
Not the right fit for: Buyers who want AI designed into the core of the product rather than added to it.
What Business Central covers
Manufacturing requires the Premium experience. It covers production BOMs, routings, work and machine centres, production orders, capacity, subcontracting and the costing of finished production for financial reconciliation, and it connects to supply planning, inventory, warehouse management and quality management2.
The Sales Order Agent
Microsoft's documentation describes an agent that monitors a mailbox, reads customer requests including PDF and image attachments, identifies the customer by the sender's email address, finds the items, checks availability and, optionally, calculates delivery dates with capable-to-promise logic3. It always creates a sales quote first, because quotes do not affect planning or cash-flow forecasts, and designated users review every outgoing message before it is sent. It works within the permissions and profile an administrator assigns. Its use is billed in Copilot Credits, and it stops processing new emails when the credits run out.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Published per-user prices: Essentials at $80 and Premium at $110 a month, paid yearly.
- The Sales Order Agent works on real ERP records, and designated users review every outgoing message before it is sent.
- Premium adds production BOMs, routings, production orders, capacity planning and subcontracting.
Limits
- AI sits on top of an established design rather than in its foundations; agents are billed separately through Copilot Credits.
- Manufacturing requires the Premium experience.
- Implementation is usually delivered by partners, and its cost is not published.
Choose another option if: You do not run on Microsoft 365, or you want an AI-first finance product with a shorter migration.
Pricing
Published: Essentials $80, Premium $110 and Team Members $8 per user a month, paid yearly. Agents consume Copilot Credits.
Questions to ask a Business Central partner
- What does implementation cost for our entities, integrations and history?
- How many Copilot Credits would the Sales Order Agent use at our order volume?
- Which other agents are generally available in our region today?
- Do we need Premium for our production processes?
